With recent news that NFT sales are plummeting, it could also be seen as a volatile business move. But because of the popularity of NFTs, it seems that many companies, not just the video game industry, want to capitalize on them.

Many said they don't need an NFT project, while others said Square Enix "broke a lot of hearts." Some also criticized the video game publisher for dabbling in NFTs, which could negatively impact the environment because of the energy used to create them. Meanwhile, fans who were either expecting a Parasite Eve remake made their disappointment known under the announcement tweet. Earlier this year, it released a Final Fantasy 7 NFT of Cloud Strife's original character design from the PS1 version of the game. The 30-second teaser didn't show any information about the project, other than the colorful logo art and the tagline, "Untangle the Story." This isn't Square Enix's first time to release an NFT. The video teaser was also posted on the NFT project's official Twitter account. The announcement was made during the Web3 Conclave conference in India on November 3rd. However, SYMBIOGENESIS is the name of Square Enix's global NFT collectible art project, which is set to launch in spring 2023. In October, the video game publisher filed a trademark for "Symbiogenesis," which was believed to be a potential Parasite Eve remake because it's the basis of Hideaki Sena's novel. Especially after Square Enix released a series of remastered games, including including Final Fantasy 7. Since coming out in 1998, Parasite Eve garnered praise from survival horror fans, and has since been part of lists of games that should get a remake. The announcement was made via a Twitter account dedicated to the project, which was received by many disappointed Parasite Evefans. While that connection is somewhat tenuous, it's hard to blame fans for being upset and disappointed that the project is ultimately an NFT grift.Square Enix's recent trademark filing, which was suspected to be a Parasite Eve remake, was recently revealed to be an NFT art project.

After the publisher registered Symbiogenesis as a trademark last month, some pointed out that the term means “the merging of two separate organisms to form a single new organism" - which is one of the foundations of Parasite Eve's story. Meanwhile, Square Enix may have to try to placate fans who were convinced that Symbiogenesis was actually a revival of 1998's Parasite Eve. Square Enix sold off some of its more notable Western studios this year and it initially planned to plow much of the proceeds into the blockchain and other tech before walking back on that plan. It's not a surprise that the company is moving in this direction after announcing in January that it would invest in blockchain games.

It seems Square Enix is facing an uphill battle to make Symbiogenesis a success. A few weeks later, an Ubisoft executive claimed players would benefit from having a marketplace where they could buy and sell NFTs of in-game items, "but they don't get it for now." In April, Ubisoft announced that the game wouldn't receive any more content updates, effectively putting the game on ice and diminishing whatever value Ghost Recon Breakpoint's NFTs had. Last December, it emerged that Ubisoft had sold barely any NFTs in Ghost Recon Breakpoint, the first title in which it employed blockchain tech. However, the NFT market has cratered this year. This is one of the highest-profile stabs at an NFT-driven gaming experience yet. By subscribing, you are agreeing to Engadget's Terms and Privacy Policy.
